Kefaya coordinator brutally assaulted in Suhag
Published by Hossam el-Hamalawy March 18th, 2007 in Activism, Egypt مصر, Human Rights حقوق إنسان, Left يسار, Mubarak مبــاركMona Fouad, a lawyer and Kefaya’s coordinator in the Upper Egyptian city of Suhag, was brutally assaulted late Friday night.
Mona was followed by two persons, as she departed her office in Nasser neighborhood, where Suhag’s State Security office and Security Directorate are also located. She felt she was slowly passing out for an unexplained reason, and woke up to find out she was bleeding. The only person nearby was a security agent with a walkie-talkie. When she screamed for help, he told her to “wait. I have to get el-Basha’s permission first.” He left her for a period of time she could not determine. Finally an ambulance showed up and transfered her to the Suhag General Hospital, where her wounds and injuries earned her 35 stitches.

What we know is that the Suhag prosecutor has gone to the hospital to interrogate Mona about the incident. No more details are available yet.

Unexplained reason? 35 stitches? odd way of putting it. The story, as I heard, is that she was stabbed. Now the interesting thing is that security in Sohag are now saying that she knew her assailant and actually paid him LE400 to stab her and in fact the whole thing was staged, and the man has been arrested. But that’s what security says and Sohag is a very odd place.
