A young Muslim woman said she and another woman were refused seats directly behind Barack Obama — and in front of TV cameras — at a Detroit rally because they wear head scarves.
Hebba Aref said Wednesday that she and Shimaa Abdelfadeel were among 20,000 supporters who gathered to see Obama on Monday at the Joe Louis Arena when the groups they were with were separately invited by Obama campaign volunteers to sit behind the podium.
But Aref said the volunteers told members of both parties in separate discussions that women wearing hijabs, the traditional Muslim head scarves, weren’t included in the invitation and couldn’t sit behind the podium.
Aref, a 25-year-old lawyer, said a member of her group was told by a volunteer that she could not invite Aref because of “a sensitive political climate.”

To be fair to the guy, he has since apologised to the women and had his picture taken with them. His campaign has also released, on their own volition, photos of him with men and women in Muslim dress. In response to the “accusations” that he himself was a Muslim he’s also said “It’s not just that I’m a Christian and so these emails are misinforming people. They’re also feeding on anti-Muslim sentiment and that’s also wrong.”
The guy has literally millions of volunteers, whom he and the campaign can’t possibly vet, and he has declared quite clearly that this decision made by two volunteers is contrary to his message.
I think you’re headline is a wee bit unfair.

اعتذر المرشح الديمقراطي للرئاسة الأمريكية باراك أوباما الجمعة 20-6-2008، لمسلمتين منعتا من الجلوس خلف المنصة التي كان يلقي من عليها كلمته، لأنهما محجبتان.
وخلال حشد انتخابي في ديترويت يوم الإثنين الماضي منع متطوعون شيماء عبد اللطيف وهبة عارف من الجلوس خلف أوباما والظهور في اللقطات التلفزيونية لأنهما محجبتان.
وقال أوباما في بيان “اتصلت بالآنسة عارف والآنسة عبد اللطيف هذا المساء. وتحدثت مع الآنسة عبد اللطيف وعبرت عن أسفي الشديد للواقعة التي حدثت من المتطوعين في ديترويت”. ووصف سناتور إيلينوي الديمقراطي تصرفات المتطوعين بأنها “غير مقبولة ولا تعكس بأي حال سياسة حملته”.
وأضاف “شعرت بإساءة شديدة وسأواصل نضالي ضد التمييز ضد أناس من أي جماعة دينية أو خلفية”.
وصرح المرشح الديمقراطي لانتخابات الرئاسة الأمريكية التي تجري في نوفمبر تشرين الثاني بأن شيماء عبد اللطيف قبلت اعتذاره وأعرب عن أمله في أن تفعل ذلك أيضا هبة عارف. وقالت ديترويت فري برس إن أوباما ترك رسالة لهبة عارف.
وجاء اعتذار أوباما الشخصي بعد أن اعتذر موظفو حملته للمحجبتين الخميس
I agree (with Callum) that yr headline was unfair, though for different reasons. what good is Obama, to Muslims, Arabs, or mankind more generally, when he does not get voted in b/c conservatives exploit Americans’ prejudices to his disadvantage? you can’t take the act out of the context and politics is politics even if it’s played by a black man who hangs with arabs.
on another note, i’m guessing they also turn away ppl wearing red tops, hawaiian shirts, an unkempt look, and some black people.

I don’t know how Americans think about any difference between any candidate from the prospect of Foreign Policy?
People, it is always the same old Democratic Republican Party. Americans are to blame for any US dangerous decision, they still support the Democratic Republic Party and they don’t wanna change.
