Er… that’s ridiculous. First the Taliban are mostly Pashtu, so how can they be a “national” liberation movement in a multi-ethnic country when they have a clearly provincial agenda? Secondly many are not Afghan, but Pakistani. So again how can they be a “national” Afghan movement? Finally I don’t understand why you would cast their fighting as trying to liberate anything — they are trying to regain the power they once had, when they enslaved (not liberated) most of Afghanistan under a type of government from the Middle Ages. Afghanistan does not really seem to have any “national” political movement of any strength for the moment, and I’m not sure why Taliban warlords would be any better than Northern Alliance warlords.
What’s ridiculous are those who think for one nano-second that the Americans or the ruling warlords are more progressive than the Taliban. Any force, call it medieval or whatever, that’s confronting the foreign occupation and its local puppets will have my unconditional support. I can have differences with them obviously and I can criticize them, but when it comes to them shooting at the occupation troops and their local agents, I fully support it. National liberation doesn’t necessarily mean Che T-shirt-wearing fighters ya habibi…
I respond to some of the points Arabist raised in the comments section of the post since someone else argued along similar lines there, if anyone is interested.
Just like Lebanon, Afghanistan is not a national country. Afghanistan is a mountain.
I like it ya hossam
