As much as I am delighted that there is some semblence of 'free speech' in Egypt, I am alarmed at the turnout of these demonstrations, and it only goes to highlight the danger of towing the 'reform' line without considering repurcussions.

While we all agree that Saddam was a bad, bad man, I think most would have to admit that the American alternative is grim and unappealing in every sense. Similarly, while Mubarak's rule may not be classed as the epitome of democracy, one has to consider what the alternatives are. Communists? Socialist? The Muslim Brotherhood? The anti-everythings?

Mubarak's 'chaos' line isn't all fluff - there is a grain of truth in there. If the liberal left, or the democractic center do not formulate a cohesive strategy, filling the eventual void that may develop if Mubarak has to allow some form of free political expression, I personally fear for the consequence. Any knee-jerk reaction to democracy right now seems destined to be just as authoritarian as the encumbant's. I do not wish to live under strict Islamic rule, nor do I wish to experiment with communism. Am I going to attend demonstrations whose only motiff is 'enough'? Hell no. Don't take me wrong - enough indeed. But then what? I'm not going to be grinning if the Mubaraks step down because - at the moment - those who will step up for the job are just as bad.

The fact that this protest happened at all (and was allowed to disperse peacefully) is good news; the sparse attendance isn't as good but is probably to be expected. I wonder whether it was allowed to happen mainly so that the mukhabarat could see who showed up.

Apparently, there was a lot of CSF and top brass at the Center because 17 activists were meeting and discussing strategies. Yet, nothing happened and no reported arrests yet.

I was at the demonstration today, but also roaming outside the seige, watching all the Egyptians who decided to participate from outside the. Three by-passer women, whom I later knew were illetrate and could not read the words on the Yellow banners, were persistently standing in silence around the seige, trying every now and then to interpret what the slogans mean, and being brushed off by several security persons, only to move the the next corner around the courthouse.

Today I learned that an Islamic discourse may be the most effective, but is not the only way to reach grassroots Egypt.
