Washington Post’s fatwa on the hijab
I was just reading Jackie Spinner’s article in yesterday’s Washington Post on the trend among Iraqi girls to wear the hijab so as to avoid standing out in the crowd, and thus becoming targets of kidnappings, shootings, etc… It’s a fine article, except for this statement of fact by the author:
Conservative Muslims believe that women should cover their heads to hide their beauty and not tempt the men who see them. Such instructions are spelled out in the Koran, the Islamic holy book.
Spelled out? I don’t think so.

The problem is that most Arabs believe it is spelled out in the Quran because of false interpretations.
I would have to disagree with the fact that most Arabs think it is clearly spelled out in the Qur’an. Actually, it’s the hadith, traditions which Sunni muslims follow in addition to the Qur’an which more difinitively outlines the method of “covering”.
Even so, it can not be argued that hijab or “covering” is not an Islamic tradition (tradition carried out by people who purport to practice Islam). However, there is a debate about whether it is simply an Islamic tradition (and thus admirable but not compulsory) or a “divine” tradition stemming from a direct edict from God.
In truth, the Qur’an has very few outright edicts on any matter, and only two references in total relating to covering, versus a multitude of references on other issues, such as prayer and charity.

i can not believe what i am reading are u joking.. the quran and the profit Mohammed(saaws) clearly stat that women have to wear the hijab when they hit puberty. there is no way around it, women dont have the choice to wear it or not, they have to, its their duty as a Muslim women. i cant understand some Muslim people, what they like from the quran they fallow what they dont like they say its not a sure thing, there is some debates. there are no debates every Muslim women has to wear the hijab. its fetna for her to go out on the street letting people see her hair, wearing tight cloth, short skirts. these women have absolutely no respect for them selves. when they go out like that what they say to allah look i am not following your rules, i dont care about you , i dont give a shit
