While I'm sure nothing annoys the commanders in the field more than a bunch of retired generals telling them what to do, it might not be that bad of an idea to get some input from experienced people. Hitler, despite his service as a corporal in WW-I, was not what most people would consider qualified to command an army. Not really the same thing as per your example.
