After just finishing his book _My Aunt Safiyya and the Monastery_ for a class, I must say I am thoroughly impressed by Taher's work. His short stories and novels have been recommended to me in many Arabic classes, and I will continue to read him. I am depressed, nonetheless, by his comment about the status of prominent Arab authors. I am afraid it is true that there is a direct correlation between violent attacks directed toward the author and his or level of fame. It makes me wonder if anyone in the United States would know about Mahfouz's _Children of Our Alley_ if were not for the controversy and the stabbing.

Just in case someone wants to read _My Aunt Safiyya and the Monastery_, this is an online version translated into English:

(Note: I have not read it in English, so I cannot attest to its quality yet.)
