• Abbas: I won't recognize Israel as a Jewish state - Haaretz - Israel News - "I do not accept it," the Western-backed Abbas said. "It is not my job to give a description of the state. Name yourself the Hebrew Socialist Republic - it is none of my business."


• Al Jazeera English - Middle East - UAE 'boosting military imports' - "The United Arab Emirates has become the world's third-largest importer of weapons after China and India, rising from 16th place in just four years, a Swedish think tank has reported."


• The Associated Press: Swine flu fears prompt quarantine plans, pork bans - "In Egypt, health authorities were examining about 350,000 pigs being raised in Cairo and other provinces for swine flu." Last night Egyptian talk shows were calling for the extermination of all pigs. The question is more complicated, though, since pigs can carry the disease but the concern for appears to be focused more on human-to-human transmission.
